In European English, too, "wend" is well known among the educated, although
perhaps limited to poetic language.  Often it occurs in phrases such as "to
wend one's way".  I doubt if all that many people would connect it with
"went", though, which is a sign of its restricted use ("wrought" is another
such
case which occurs to me).

There is a general tendency in non-standard English to conflate the past
participle and the preterite, and this is very strong in Scots. The use of
"went" as the past participle is recorded as early as William Dunbar, but
would be
thought low-register in the present-day literary language.
