When your ancestor was from the city of Saint-Omer itself (and so was his
family), it would be perfectly safe to assume that his first language was
Flemish. If your ancestor was from one of the surrounding villages, it
depends on which village he was from. Only about fifteen kilometres south
and southwest of Saint Omer villages were already for a large part
French-speaking in the 17th century. To the east, northwest and north, the
Flemish language was even stronger then in Saint Omer itself.
