Lowlanders: I'll toss another coal on the fire. There's a linguistic school
that maintains that IE developed from the Semitic, which resides in the
Afro-Asiatic family. In scientific circles, it's well known that Semitic
languages are one of six co-ordinate branches of the Afro-Asiatic family
inclusive of ancient Egyptian, Cushitic, Chadic, and Berberic. The Sahara
Desert area must be assumed as the original home of the AA as an age of at
least 10kyrs is the period the Sahara was green and Europe at this time was
under the influence of the last glacial epoch. Any relationship between IE
and Semitic also asumes a relationship between IE and AA, hence North
Africa. This theory postulates that protoIE existed almost 5kyrs ago
somewhere in eastern Europe. This was the period of the ending of the
glacial period when Europe began to warm and the Sahara began to decay into
a desert, leading to the migration of hordes into Europe (and Asia),
contributing to the genesis of PIE.
