Beste Peter,

Ik vind dit een lastige vraag, aangezien mijn voorkeur eigenlijk per geval
verschilt. Ik denk bijvoorbeeld dat het toch vooral 'e-mail' en 'computer'
moet zijn, maar tegelijkertijd is elke willekeurige Lowlands-taal natuurlijk
doorspekt met buitenlandse leenwoorden, die dan vaak worden 'omgespeld'. In
het Nederlands kennen we natuurlijk het debat 'cadeau-kado', terwijl
bijvoorbeeld 'fabriek' al heel normaal is, met die vernederlandste spelling.

Maar, ik vermoed dat jij met deze vraag doelt op de diverse streektalen. Mij
valt op dat die toch vooral een voorkeur hebben om dit soort woorden 'om te
spellen'. Zo kent het Fries bijvoorbeeld 'kompjûter' en in het Limburgse
Woordenboek 'Taal van de Maas' staan 'kómpjoeter' en 'plestik'. Of ik het
hier mee eens ben, weet ik nog zo net niet, eigenlijk... Ik kan me voor bv
'e-mail' toch echt geen andere spelling voorstellen.

Trouwens, streektalen zitten vaker met dit soort spellingsproblemen,
namelijk die van de overheersende standaardtaal. Voor ons is dat Nederlands,
en dus is het voor veel mensen toch lastig --of juist aantrekkelijk-- om
woorden nét even anders te spellen, terwijl ze duidelijk overeenkomen met
het Nederlandse synoniem.

The difficulty with trying to write Scots is that we were never taught
to -and there is no agreed standard. I know for myself when i have I have
wanted to write what is akin to my own dialect but have looked up the
spelling for words - I have often thought  "that is not how we would
pronounce it" and have therefore felt unwilling to use the dictionary
spelling as it does not seem a reflection of my own pronunciation.

It will be good the day that we do have a standardised spelling that all
kids are taught in School - but until then  - what we see presented in
dictionaries etc can seem alien to our own experience and using it a
betrayal of what we are trying to do - assert our own individuality and
identity.

Additionally I would pronounce "haud" and "auld" differently - where the
"au" sound in each is quite distinctively different ( in "haud" it is much
shorter - like the /u/ sound in English "mud" -and the "au" sound in "auld"
is much longer and drawn out, a bit like "aw" in English "awl". I am from
Edinburgh -so that would be East Central dialect.
