Andy,

I think all that just backs up my final point - none
of these problems is insurmountable.

I wouldn't doubt that there *are* some cases across
Scots dialects where certain sounds are pronounced
differently in some dialects and the same in others,
even without influence on/from English.

However, a little compromise, common sense and the
occasional 'accepted variation' would soon sort that
out.

Like I say, we're really nearer the target than we
think. It's more a matter of PR now - people trying to
'enforce a standard' will fail, people simply
'suggesting a house-style' or 'drawing up guidelines'
will succeed.
