Subject: Language Varieties

Cristoir,

Now that's a *very* valid point.

With respect, Scots *have* to be less insular on such
things - by acting alone they isolate themselves and
appear insignificant, which is part of the problem.
Let us be clear what the Agreement is: it is an
international accord signed *only* by the Government
of the UK and the Government of Ireland (NI parties
may have agreed to it and may be obliged to stick to
some of its principles, but they did *not* sign it and
it does *not* belong to them). It affects the whole
UK, both in theory and in practice.

It has wide implications in a number of areas, but for
this list I would stick to the precedent of a language
body for Ulster Scots. Now, for a variety of reasons,
that particular body has descended into something of a
farce. However, the principle that the Scots language
should have a government-funded body to support it has
been established and should be well noted by our
Scottish friends.

Best wishes,
------------------
