Throughout medieval literature, the wolf is featured under the nickname
"Isegrim", "Isengrim", "Ysengrim", "Ysegrym", etc., such as in the famous
story of Reynard the Fox (e.g., Middle Saxon _Reynke de Vos_, Alsatian _
Isengrîmes nôt _, Latin of Ghent _Ysengrimus _).  I assume it is a taboo
replacement (like "Old Nick" for "devil").

Does anyone know what the origin and ethymology of the name is?  Does it
have anything to do with iron?
