>When in Amsterdam I have often heard people taking their leave of each
other saying something like doe-ii (I am representing this in Dutch
orthography as best as I can). Can any of you enlighten me by suggesting an
origin for this curious usage?

I personally have always thought that it comes from 'dag', which is short
for 'goeiedag / goedendag', which people use as a greeting when they leave.
I would think that it gradually changed, a bit like this: dag - doeg - doei.
I have never heard an explanation of this, this is just my thought, right or
wrong.
