Dear Lowlanders,
When I visited our dear friend Reuben Epp in Kelowna (British Columbia)
recently, he gave me a copy of _Plautdietsche Frind_. This is a magazine
published by the organization Plautdietsch-Freunde e.V. in Oerlinghausen,
Germany, foremost by our friend Peter Wiens, still a young man who does a
lot for the Mennonite Lowlands Saxon (Plautdietsch) language. I have to
admit that I was quite surprised and impressed when I saw the magazine.
Without a doubt it is so far the best Lowlands Saxon (Low German) magazine
anywhere in the world. Other Lowlands Saxon organizations could learn a
thing or two from it. Our Mennonite and Mennonite-descendant friends thus
show us how it is done, perhaps because they live scattered all over the
world and have learned to look across fences.
_Plautdietsche Frind_ is a "glossy magazine," very professionally
presented with beautiful pictures and colors. The articles are mostly
entertaining, and there are also club news and letters to the editor. But
there are also some articles for those who are willing to learn and to
think. In the issue I got from Reuben there is an article about racism (by
Peter Wiens), an article about the history of Plautdietsch (by Reuben Epp)
and an article about the Mennonites and their non-Mennonite neighbors in
Russia (by Katharina Neufeld). Everything is written in Plautdietsch -- not
difficult to read for those who can understand other Lowlands Saxon dialects
and German.
I wholeheartedly recommend this magazine. It is a collector's item, a
treasure of Lowlands Saxon, worth a lot more than 12 Euros (or US$20
including postage to the States) for four issues per year (3 Euro for one
issue).

   Yours, Reinhard/Ron
