I don't know what category to place this but we did not emigrate from
Germany as much as dissappeared from there.We perpretated an elaborate ruse
to let family and friends believe that we had emigrated to Australia when in
fact we had moved to the USA. Still, after my mother died and he felt that
it was  safe to visit, it is to the Rahden/Espelkamp area that he visited,
rather than to his homeland in the Carpathians. Following his first return
visit, he told me what fun it had been to have been able to talk
Plattdeutsch again, after all these years.  The reason for all this took me
years to appreciate but my father was a veteran of an obscure Luftwaffe
group that no one probably heard of called Kampfgeschwader 200.  The men in
his unit were fluent in Russian and put on Russian uniforms and flew
captured Russian planes behind the front and assassinated Russian
officers,performed acts of sabotage and general mayhem behind the front. He
was afraid that the British would discover that he had been in KG200 and
turn him over to the Russians.  His life expectancy would have been very
short if that had happened.  It is for this reason that we lost all contact
with friends and family.  I guess that you can consider my father to be a
lowlander by adoption.  I think though that my father and the rest of us
felt more at home in the lowlands that any other place that we had ever
lived.  Whatever it was about the area, I don't want these qualities to die.
