Tja, verbasen dayt my dat nich. In dey meyrsten gemeynen schuult dey spraak
in dey hüys', gayt nich veel up dey straat. Wen 'n öldere lokaal-lüyd'
snakken süyt, den mut 'n sik maal dicht by hinstellen un luuk-ouren. Or
mutst 'n kroug besöken, 'neem dey lokalen jüm eer stamdischen hebt.
Besünners wen sey 'n lütten in dey prüyk hebt, den snatert sey man so in dey
olde spraak, ook wen "kwitjes" daar by sünd.

Well, no, that doesn't surprise me. In most communities, the language hides
in private homes, doesn't get out a lot. When you see older folks chatting,
you could "happen to" stand within earshot and eavesdrop. Or you've got to
visit one of the pups where locals have their _Stammtische_ (meetings at
customarily reserved tables). Especially once they get a bit tipsy ("have a
little one in their wigs") they will carry on in the old language, even if
"Quittjes" (i.e., a Hamburg term non-Saxon-or-Missingsch-speaking
non-locals) are present.

(It doesn't say much for linguistic self-esteem, does it?)

Good to have you back home, Luc, and with full steam ahead again, it seems.

Gröytens/Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
