> It is known that people from Dutch/Flemish-speaking areas settled in
> Eastern Germany and farther east, besides to various places in
> Northwestern Germany (e.g., Friedrichstadt and Altes Land) as well as
> Scotland, and that they left their marks in numerous communities.
>
> Besides, wooden shoes (clogs) used to be worn in many places outside the
> Dutch/Flemish area, such as in Northern Germany (_Klompen_ ~ _Klumpen_
> and _holten T ffeln_ ~ _hulten Tffeln_), Britain, Wallonia, Northern
> France and Scandinavia.

They were also common in parts of Italy. Mario Battali, a chef and
restaurant owner with his own cooking show ("Molto Mario") on the Food
Network here in the US, wears clogs (well, modern plastic ones) all the
time
on his show. There was also an Italian movie called "The Tree of Wooden
Clogs," set on a farm in northern Italy. In the movie, one of the farm
workers cuts down one of the landowner's trees to make a pair of clogs
for
his young son to wear to school.
