Ruud & Kristoff,

The Normans spoke 'Norman-French', a form of French,
but nonetheless one distinct from Parisian French
(upon which the Standard is now based) partly because
of its Germanic influence. This influence was
particularly marked in the Germanic initial /w/ versus
Romance /g/ (cf. English 'war', French 'guerre').

This division is responsible for sets of loan words
into English from French such as 'warden' (Norman) vs.
'guardian' (Parisian) and 'warranty' (Norman) vs.
'guarantee' (Parisian).

Of course, the laws of the UK are still given Royal
Assent partly in Norman French - see www.parliament.uk
