Subject: Etymology

Hi Ron,

"Matjes herring" has evolved from "medykens hering" (litterally "meidjes
haring" or "maagden haring" in Dutch). Middle Saxon had "madikes herink", so
the original idea is "virgin herring" because it's so young and fresh.

We do have a "maatjespeer" in Dutch though ("määtensbeer" in Cologne), and
that pear is believed to have such a name because it's ripe somewhere around
November 11, when Sint-Maarten ("Sinte Mätte" in Brabantish) is celebrated.
There's actually three guys who give presents in folkloric belief, "Sinte
Mätte", "Sinterklaas" and "de grèèf van allefvaste".

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx
