Dan: Those in LS who consider themselves as being in the forefront
of LS-"Sprachpflege" will NEVER understand that. For them "Sprachpflege"
is like caring for an old grand-ma whose days are counted and whose
remaining days have to be made as pleasant as possible (Folkloreseligkeit).
For proof I am attaching a copy of a letter re:Bewusstseinsbildung
I wrote to the leading LS periodical (Quickborn in Hamburg)
that was declared "unreceivable" by the president.
For you and all of us to draw your conclusions.

   Als ich in den Spiegel guckte, den Ingo Burmeister uns vorhält, erschrak
ich: Sind wir das?
   Spiegel lügen nicht. Also woher kommt dieses traurige Spiegelbild?
   Sicher, wir alle wissen es: Es kommt in erster Linie von der erstickenden
Übermacht der deutschen Sprache, die alle Machtmittel, von Medien über
Schulsystem bis zur Verwaltung fest in Händen hält. Eifersüchtig wird
darüber gewacht, dass sich die Landessprache nicht anmaßt, auch nur ein
winziges Eckchen dieses Machtbereiches anzueignen. Jeder Versuch dazu wird
mit eifersüchtigen Argwohn beäugt und am besten gleich abgewürgt. Nicht mal
auf Straßenschildern hat die Landessprache irgendetwas zu suchen.
   Aber Hand aufs Herz: Liegt es nicht auch an uns? Warum begeben wir uns
seit jeher in die Rolle eines Anhängsels, um nicht zu sagen Wurmfortsatzes
der uns erstickenden Sprache? Was wir schon im Namen ausdrücken:
 -  Quickborn, Zeitschrift für plattdeutsche Sprache und Literatur,
 -  Quickborn, Vereinigung für niederdeutsche Sprache und Literatur.
   Sind wir als Träger einer Sprache, die nunmehr offiziell als
Regionalsprache anerkannt ist, nicht selbstbewusst genug, uns auf die
Herkunft unserer Sprache zu besinnen und ihr den ihr zustehenden Namen
wiederzugeben?
   Nennen die Katalanen Ihre Sprache etwa "niederspanisch", die Walliser
"plattenglisch", die Sveas "plattfinnisch" oder die Westfriesen
"niederholländisch"?
   Was machen denn unsere Sprachlandsleute in NL? Sagen sie auch
"niederdeutsch"? Oder gar "plattholländisch"? Nein, sie nennen ihre, unsere
Sprache "saksisch".
   SAKSISCH! Unsere Sprache ist eine sächsische Sprache!
   Ich beantrage hiermit formell, folgenden Antrag in der Vereinigung zur
Diskussion zu stellen, u.a. durch Veröffentlichung im Quickborn:
   Antrag:
Die Vereinigung ändert ihren Namen in:
 -  Vereinigung für sassische Sprache und Literatur.
Die Vereinigungszeitschrift wird umbenannt in:
 -  Zeitschrift für sassische Sprache und Literatur.

What?!  I didn't know there was such a thing in correspondence etiquette.

Mike, you know that you and I see eye to eye about many of these issues,
certainly about the fundamental ones.  I think it's in the area of approach
or strategy that we seem to have somewhat divergent views.

You and I may not agree with what those folks do and with the way they do
it.  However, I like to think that, fundamentally, they and we are on the
same side, at least ought to be.  I happen to have had contacts with some of
them, including the ones you mentioned, and I assure you that, dispite my
disagreement with the way they viewed and handled one thing or the other, I
found them to be nice and honorable people that have their eyes on the same
prize.  I don't believe that beating them over the head is going to
accomplish anything positive, not even if what you beat them over the head
with is the truth for all we know.  Such an approach is bound to alienate
them from the get-go (hence the reaction) and create a hostile atmosphere in
which everyone digs in their heels, doesn't budge an inch and blacklists
people that ought to be their allies, and where mutual labeling and
polarization of positions would be the result.  Would not diplomacy, a
step-by-step approach, be likely to accomplish more in the long run, in a
less challenging, strained atmosphere in which lines of communication remain
open and dialogues can thus continue, step by step?  I do not expect things
to change overnight, and I feel it is unrealistic to expect them to after
centuries of education that teaches a view that is different from the one
you try to instill.

Apart from this, how realistic would it be to offer, say next week, a
Lowlands Saxon manuscript to one of the few receptive publishers in Germany,
include _Sassisch_, _sächsisch_, _Neddersassisch_ or _niedersächsisch_ in
the title or subtitle and expect the editor to accept it?  Even if one of
them did, what do you think the reaction of the potential readers would be?
Most of them have never even heard of it, don't have the faintest idea that
their language descended from Old Saxon, have never been in on the debate
and would probably assume that it has something to do with the
(non-Saxon-speaking) state of Saxony or is confined to the state of Lower
Saxony.  This is why I am saying that it is unrealistic to expect overnight
solutions, that a step-by-step approach would go much farther.  In
manuscripts I usually sneak references to "Saxon" in somewhere here or
there, for instance in the introduction.  This tends to be tolerated and
thus passes by the watchdogs.  A reference here, another one there, and
gradually people get used to it, incorporate it into their awareness and may
even warm up to the idea.

P.S.: By the way, like it or not (and I don't), I have read and heard German
references to _plattdänisch_, _hochchinesisch_ and _plattholländisch_; so
I'm afraid people in Germany may not even consider your examples
(_niederspanisch_, _plattenglisch_, _plattfinnisch_, _niederholländisch_)
with reference to non-standard varieties all that absurd.
