A story about immigrants speaking their language in the presence of the
native born.
  My wife witnessed a woman exploding into a rage while at a nail shop
staffed by immigrant Russians.  As they worked along they prattled on in
Russian.  That woman felt as if they were gossiping about her and took
umbrage.  I think that the Russian women thereafter became
well-practiced in English.

Talking about languages which are used only within the family and among
close friends, etc.  That was the case with English after the Normans
shrouded the society with their French.  And ultimately English survived
and won out.

It occurs to me that in Hamburg they eat frankfurters and in Frankfurt
they eat hamburgers.
