I surely understand that Enlish survived for other
reasons as well.  English persisted mainly because the common man knew
no French nor did he have to.  French was for the elite.  It would have
taken many more centuries of French rule to have supplanted English.
Intermarriage took its toll on French for obvious reasons.  And also
very importantly, the Anglo-Normans ultimately had to declare allegience
to either France or England
