As far as speerin the documents gaes the'r three areas:

    1. lugic - the title, makar an siclike;

    2. semantics - what the document's anent;

    3. syntax - the wey the document's set oot.

I think the first's best pittin in some kin o "heid" section at the start o
the document (mindin that bi a "document" I mean some lugical diveesion o
the information - likes o a single poem or a beuk chaipter, no aye a hale
wabpage) or in a database gin ye like. Gin ye'r juist uizin CSS ye coud
"hide" this on the page, but XML wad gie ye faur mair options.

The saicont wad maist likely be duin wi a sairch engine or (better yit) bi
data minin like I wis sayin.

I dinna think the third ane's richt relevant tae Scotstext. In fack I'd
think that if a body thocht on sairchin wab documents bi the wey thay wis
set oot, thay'd juist git badly designed pages, wi hou formattin shoudna be
relevant tae a wab page ava! Houanever, the'r some things that coud be warth
cannin sairch for in terms o layoot - likes o "pages wi a table o contents"
or "pages wi a copyricht nottice" - I dout this could be duin wi a sairch
engine that keeks at the XML tags thairsels.

Sae I think I'v got aathing covered that's wantin duin. I dinna richt agree
wi the idea o giein fowk as mony inroads as ye can think on - I dout a
wabsteid's no a saftware application like Word that fowk spends years on an
lairns aa the ins an oots o, it's soemthing thay juist explores tentless in
odd meenits an thay never taks ony interest in uizin the faceelities richt -
binna yer wabsteid juist chances tae be as important as Google's ain sel! I
dout aa's nott for the interface is twathree kenspeckle kin o tools - a
sairch engine (whether bruit-force or mair sophisticate) an a form for mair
kittle data retrieval (like Google's "Advanced Search" pitten thegither wi
fields for retrievin bi title, makar an siclike) an that's aboot aa.

> XML is gie guid fur
> this, but is a
> bit o a hied nipper! Ah've got a gie wee brain, an XML maks it
> gie sair! ;-)

I dinna think XML itsel's ony bather, it's juist that for the nou the arna
ony tools that lats fowk uize it strecht awa throu thair browsers, forby
IE6. Gin ye div hae IE6, ye can see ane o my aerly shots at XML for
Scotstext at http://www.scotstext.org/xml/

Ane o my favourite things aboot it is the wey it generates a table o
contents automatic, an ye coud mak it sae's it links fae items in the
contents tae the poems thairsels an aa - but this is naething compared tae
the things ye can dae wi XML wi a bit mair wark.
