Hi y'all:
"Why has the "l" assimilated into the "r"? (To make this more
pan-Lowlandic)"
My analysis is that the initial vowel is a back vowel, and therefore "pulls"
the _l_ to the back making it a "dark L."  The following _r_ (Americanized
version, anyway) is articulated with many of the same characteristics of the
"clear L."  Therefore, it's just plain easy to make a "dark L" and an _r_
blend together.  So, blame it on that back vowel!
