As one raised in the old brutal style of child upbringing in Scotland I feel
both you and Criostair are correct.  Kids beaten and verbally abused at home
may well have augmented their natural childish instincts by taking out their
frustrations on  child victims of the Dumps. Probably made them feel a lot
better.

What you said makes a lot of sense: a traditional culture of violence
(hopefully the tail end of it), that is certainly not limited to Scotland.
