RE: Irish Grammar & Spelling: It is obvious that the spelling of Irish,
intended to impart grammatical sense, is
in reality not a simple spelling spelling system as such, but more towards a
'cheat sheet' kind of primer...perhaps 'margin notation' from a monastic
tradition? One who SPEAKS the language would not need the EXTRA LETTERS as
PROMPTS to show 'mutation' etc. It is not done in WELSH, and is NOT
necessary to IRISH spelling, even in the IRISH SCRIPT! There are supposed to
be TWENTY LETTERS
based upon LATIN, of which TWO are 'hibernated' and used as
'diacritical marks', ie the Q & Z (Latin X), which come back into paly as
the 'LONG VOWEL MARK' (Z) and the "H after a consonant" (Q). That is a
'BLACKTHORN'... (STRAIF)(vowels) and 'APPLE' (QUERT)...which can be
'deciphered iconographically-APPLE ='dot'....THORN='accented mark'.Being as
the amount of sounds PHONOLOGIC-WISE is quite small, teh idea is to learn
the languguage then spell according by ROMAN ALPAHBET & IRISH SCRIPT. There
should be no problem, as one represents a cursive almanac script, the other
a modern print ideal. But to continue a practice which makes a two-syllable
word 17 letters long is rediculous-and the OLDER pelling of Gaelic can be
seen in DINEEN's of last century!
a DOTT
