This is really helpful. As far as I can understand, there are five or six
conflicting theories about how Afrikaans came into existence; so I kind of
gave up on trying to find the one unifying theory. It is mich easier to
trace the origin of separate features, like this one.

this answers a lot of my questions.
I can understand what you write, although writing and speaking Afrikaans is
still a challenge for me. I do hope to be able to communicate in it in a few
months.
