In Danish we say "sexet" and it is slowly getting the new meaning as
well - especially within the field of computers and with cars. But it is
mostly a nerd word so far, as people often respond with something like:
"Sexy? you think things are sexy? Get a life!". So if you think software
is sexy, then you only talk about it with other people who think that as
well.

Subject: Etymology

Dear all,

On the historia matematica mailing list recently has been some discussion
about the distinction between the German words Anzahl and Zahl, both
translated into number in English. Nederlands and Frysk have the same
distinction (Aantal-Getal, resp. Oantal-Getal) that English apparently
lacks. How about Scots, Lowlands Saxon and perhaps other languages?

Floor,

As far as I know, the North Saxon dialects of Lowlands Saxon (Low German)
have only the word _tal_ (<Tall> [ta.l]) for both German _Zahl_ and
_Anzahl_.  (I don't know about Groningen dialects, which I count as "North
Saxon" too.)

The derived (umlauted) verb is _tellen_ 'to count'.  It is contained in the
verb _vertellen_ 'to tell' (cf. "to recount").

The only difference between German _Zahl_ and _Anzahl_ vis-Ã -vis English I
can tell is that, depending on the context, _Zahl_ can be translated either
as 'number' or as 'figure', while _Anzahl_ can only be translated as
'number'.

I have a "gut" feeling that _Anzahl_ is the countable equivalent of
uncountable _Menge_ 'amount'.  However, don't take *my* word for it, since I
am anything but a mathematician, just look at this from a purely linguistic
point of view.
