Lee Goldberg, Shalom Rav.
To you & all the others in this fine string on 'H-Deletion in Hebrew &
Yiddish',
I do not believe it is such a new phenomenon. I am closely acquainted
with an Israeli in his late sixties.
Ja'akov was born of vatikim into a kibbutz milieu. Where a Litvak would
say, e.g. "Sholem Jeeden", he says, "Shalom 'Eeden".
I think most of his people come from South & East of the 'Gefilte Fish'
fracture line. Well, yes, a scholar of Jewish demography told me this one
(Ze'ev Teqes of Kibbutz Mishmar HaNegev). It is apparently the most reliable
delineator of several sound-shifts in Yiddish, whether your traditions lean
to sweet gefilte fish, or savoury.
