The Scottish National Dictionary is in 10 volumes but this is out of print
and costs about £800 when it was last in print. It does have comprehensive
etymologies. Still in print is the compact form which is the full dictionary
in two volumes with tiny print that you really need a magnifying glass to
read. That's not as bad as you might think, since sometimes the sheer
physical labour of handling a ten-volume version outweighs the inconvenience
of using a magnifying glass. It's £175 hardback or £120 paperback.

If you do want the 10-volume version, McNaughton's bookshop in Edinburgh
(top of Leith Walk, downstairs in a basement shop) has a second-hand one at
the moment (unless they've sold it since I was last in, but it's been there
a while), going for £200.

The website for information and ordering of Scots dictionaries is
http://www.snda.org.uk/

However, there's no need to pay for anything - both the Scottish National
Dictionary and the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue are fully on-line
at http://www.dsl.ac.uk/dsl/

Note that if you're working with the modern language you should click on the
"SND" headwords rather than "DOST", which is the older language.
