Toen ik voor iemand informatie was aan het opzoeken voor de meerkat
(naar ik dacht, een aapsoort) kwam ik tot de conclussie dat het woord
"meerkat" een heel andere betekenis heeft in het Nederlands dan in het
Engels.

In het Nederlands is de meerkat de familie der "Cercopithecus" onder de
primaten (aap-achtige). De term in het Engels is "Guenon".

In het Engels is de "Meerkat" een heel andere familie der dieren. Het is
een kat-achtige, ook gekende onder de naam "Suricate". De nederlandse
term is "stokstaartje".

(Best gekend vanwege de "Timon" figuur van Disney).

Iemand enig idee als deze naam-verwarring puur toevallig is; of als er
hier een verhaal achter zit. Feit is dat het stokstaartje/meerkat in
Zuid-Afrika leeft; dus misschien heeft het iets hier mee te maken.
Misschien is de naam vanuit het afrikaans in het engels terecht-gekomen.

The question here is concering the word "Meerkat".

In dutch, this is a family of primates (ape-like) animals:
"Cercopithecus" in Latin. In English, it is a family of cat-like animals
  ("Suricate" in Latin); best known for the "Timon" character of
Disney's Junglebook.

My question, is this name mix-up pure accident or is there some reason
between this. Fact is that the Meerkat/Stokstaartje lives in
Soutern-Afrika so -perhaps- the "migration" from dutch to english (or
the other way around) happend via Afrikaans.

Anybody any idea?
