Zuid-Afrika leeft; dus misschien heeft het iets hier mee te maken.

Daar is 'n etomologiese woordeboek online. dit gee redelike goeie
verklarings van waar woorde vandaan kom. Ek het dit laas week gebruik om my
etomologie huiswerk te doen en my proffie was tevrede daarmee :) Hier is 'n

Ek leen op die oomblik 'n boek by een van my proffies, die boek is:
Africanderisms, a glossary of colloquial words and phrases, compliled by the
Rev. Charles Pettman in 1913.
Hier is wat die book sê oor meerkat:

meerkat. (D. meerkat, a monkey; lit. sea-cat; cf. Ger. Meerkatze,
"Uberseeische Katze" - Tetzner. Andresen and other maintian that the owrd is
a corruption of the Sanscrit markata, an ape) Suricata teradactyla and
Cynictis penicillata, two small animals not unlike the prairie dog of the
Western Sates of America both in appearance and habit.

This seems to be one of the many examples in south African nomenclature in
which the names of known animals in Europe have been transferred to African
animals that were supposed to resemble them; with the result in this case
that, to make the word mean something, the former part of it has been made
by some equivalent to the English word "moor" (Bryden, "Kloof and Karoo," p.
55, 1889), and by others to the Dutch word "mier" (cf. Eng. pis-mire), an
ant.
