Subject: The Wren - Anglo Saxon

Hello all,

I have completed my attempt to render "The Wren" in Anglo Saxon, but before
passing the final version on to Ron, et al - I would like to post it here to
ask of those more familiar with Anglo Saxon for your input, additions and
corrections. My Anglo Saxon is quite rusty and I'm sure there may be errors.

I have used the chevron over the vowels to indicate length and have used ð
exclusively rather than switching back and forth between ð and þ. Only one I
had a problem with was long 'æ' - had to write it as 'æ^'.

Sê Wrenna – Anglo-Saxon

Sê wrenna hæfde sîn nest in ðæ^m wægnhûs. Ântîd, ðâ ealdoras hæfdon samlîce
ûtgeflogen, forðon hîe woldon findan fôd ðæt hiera cild etan mihton, and hîe
hæfdon hiera geongras gelæ^ten.

Æfter sum tîma, Fæder Wrenna cwôm bæc tô ðæt nest. "Lâ! Hwæt is hêr
geweorðan?!" cwæd hê. "Hwâ hæfð ðis êow gedôn, mine cild? Gê sind ealle swâ
frêaforhtlic!"

"Lâ Fæder," cwæ^don hîe, "micel pûcamann hæfð tô ûs gecumen. Forhtiendlic
wæs hê mid sînum grêatum êagum swâ hê starode in ûre nest. Þonne habbað wê
micel forhtung!"

"Sôðlic," cwæd sê ealdor, "Hwær is hê nû gegân?"

"Gêa," cwæ^don hîe, "hê is in ðæ^m wude gegân."

"Âbîdað hêr," cwæd sê ealdor, "ic sceall æfter hine gân. Ne dræ^dað! Ne
habbað gê ne forhtung mine cild, ic will him leornung tæ^can." And flêogað
hê æfter hine.

Ðonne flêogað hê ðurh ðone wude and ðâ hê wildcatt siehð.

Ac sê wrenna ne forhtiað. Hê âlîhteð on ðæt bæc ðæs wildcattes and æt him
gielleð. "Hwý cumest ðû tô mîn hûs," cwæd hê, "and mine cild forhtian?!"

Sê wildcatt nâðinc ne sægð and gangeð hê forð.

Ðæt macað sê hlûdmûð efen mâra heardor æt him giellan. "Ðû scealt næ^fre tô
mîn hûs ne âgêncuman, ic ðê secge! And gif ðû âgêncumest," cwæd hê, "Sôðlic
scealt ðû sêon! ic ne wille ðæt ic ðæt dôn môt," cwæd hê, and ahefeð ân
sînes fô d mîn fôt in ân êagan bearhtm!"

Ðâ flêogað hê bæc tô sîn nest.

"Eall is gôd, cild," cwæd hê, "Ic hæbbe him leornung getæcen. Ne wille hê
hêr næ^fre âgêncuman."

Thanks,

Lovely, Mike!

So far, the only thing I have to suggest is this:

> "Âbîdað hêr," cwæd sê ealdor, "ic sceall æfter hine gân.

Perhaps this would be better:
"Âbîdað hêr," cwæd sê ealdor, "ic sceall æfter hine hléapan.

Or, it may ne possible to just say:
"Âbîdað hêr," cwæd sê ealdor, "ic sceall æfter hine.

Or
"Âbîdað hêr," cwæd sê ealdor, "ic sceall hine folƽian (folgian).

Or you could use the following verbs, all in the sense of "to pursue":
âdrîfan, bedrîfan, befylgan, drîfan, féogan, fíon, fylgan, gedrîfan,
gefylgan, gespyrian, hėntan, hettan, æ^htan, spyrian, wracian, wrecan

What do you think?

Are you going to make a sound recording of it? If not, does anyone else.
(In the worst case scenario I might give it a shot, though I would prefer
others to do it.)

Thanks and regards,
Reinhard/Ron
