Just a brief note: I think that bringing your bike over from the United
States is not a good idea in this case, and can quickly get you into trouble
if you get caught. In Germany, there are rather strict regulations as to how
your bicycle must be equipped to be allowed on public roads; it must have
front and rear lights, specific front, rear and side reflectors, two brakes,
a loud bell, etc. - for traffic safety reasons, you can get cited if you
don't comply. So if you want to bring your own bike over, first make very
sure that it is OK to ride it in public traffic here. Also, keep in mind
that European (at least Dutch and German) bicycle pumps do not fit American
valves.
