Die Ou kêrel beweer dis seker 'n gebeukde leenwoord uit die Bantoe-tale. Hy
verwys na die Noord-Sotho 'mmupundu' en die BaVenda 'mububulu'.

Die boom het ook 'n ou Afrikaanse naam 'bolletrie'. Die '-trie agtervoegsel
is natuurlik 'boom', maar daardie woord word deesdae net in digtelikke
verband aangewend.
