Isn't it rather the reverse - that PC attitudes lead to an excessive
sensitivity about the use of the word "black"?

If I've told the following story before I apologise. My sister was doing VSO
(like Peace Corps) in Grenada. Because of the American "invasion" she
returned temporarily and spent some time scrounging educational supplies. At
a school she'd taught at in East London she found a storeroom full of copies
of the "Pirate" readers which had been very popular but which the teachers
now refused to use because the pirates were named after colours and the
"Black Pirate" was the baddie. So all these politically incorrect books went
by banana boat to Grenada where they were gratefully received and nobody
bothered about the overtones. The puppet drama "Captain Scarlet and the
Mysterons" was recently rerun on UK TV even though the "renegade" is Captain
Black. I guess
times change.
