Subject: Language varieties

According to the _Oxford Companion to the Eng Lang_, St Augustine hired
Frankish interpreters to help him deal with the English. The book suggests
that this indicates that the languages were similar. This argument falls
down, of course, if he hired English-speaking interpreters whom he found on
the Channel coast (which would have been quite smart) or if the Franks were
useless. But since the wife of Ethelbert, King of Kent, was a daughter of
the Frankish king there were plausibly already numbers of people at court
who would have spoken both Frankish and Kentish, so Augustine's interpreters
may have been mainly employed in translating his "Latin" (whatever that
precisely was) into Frankish. (Dante, 600+ years later called his own
language "Latin".)
