Subject: Anniversary

Dear Lowlanders,

Non-members have been kind enough to add to our anniversary collection 
(http://www.lowlands-l.net/anniversary/).

A day or so ago I posted a Tagalog version and just now made the raw sound 
recording with the friend who translated it.  I'll post it as soon as it has 
been edited.

Most recently, I added a version of the story in the West Flemish dialect of 
Nieuwpoort, not far from Oostende on the Belgian coast.  It was sent to me 
from New York by an obviously nice lady, and it looks as though a sound 
recording is in the offing.

Enige toelichting: Nieuwpoort was traditioneel een vissershaven(tje) aan de 
Belgische Noordzeekust. Het Nieuwpoorts is een kustdialect, d.w.z. dat het 
verschilt van de plattelandsdialecten uit de achterliggende polders, en 
zeker van de  verderop liggende landbouwgebieden. Het Nieuwpoorts is zeer 
nauw verwant met het Oostends, dat ook een vissersdialect is.

Ik heb me altijd laten vertellen dat vissers van rondom de Noordzee mekaar 
allemaal konden verstaan / begrijpen als ze gewoon hun dialect met mekaar 
spreken. Hebben jullie enig idee of dat inderdaad zo is? Misschien iets 
interessants om uit te zoeken.
