Subject: etymology? and meaning
Hi Lowlanders, The Dutch word for cardboard box is “de doos”. My
etymological dictionary tells me that it came about as a container for a
dose of medicine. My gut tells me that a more logical explanation would be
as container for a dozen items. Does anybody have any ideas about that?

Hello Ms Jacqueline,
I thought the word doos which is also used as gift or present in Dutch may
have been a loan from the French.
I am intrigued with the Dutch use of cadeau for gift or small present. I
noticed that Dutch parfumdoosje in Limburgs is loderendeuske. Do you think
there is a link here?
Cheers
