Let me add to that. The same applies with Hebrew,

sofer = author, writer, scribe
safar = count
sifer = tell, recount, speak
mispar = a number, a quantity
mesaper = story teller

And it goes right back to the Akkadian,

saparu = to write, to send
&c. I must go bye.

I am familiar with the verb. It's the use of the word as a noun, with the
first syllable stressed -- /'ri:kaUnt/ -- which surprised me. This use, with
this meaning, is not given in the decently huge New Oxford Dict of English
(2002). This is why I presumed it was a non-standard usage.

I never came across this term during my Edinburgh schooling from 1940
through to 1952 although we had to write essays with such a background.
It may be a more modern innovation. We did write AC-COUNTS of things
that happened. Only recounts I encountered were after general
elections.
