I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun's life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.

Vandaage stao ik op,
deur de kracht van de hemel.
locht van de zunne,
schiensel van de maone.
Gliensteren van 't vuur,
snelheid van 't locht,
gezwienheid van de wiend.
Diepte van de zee,
stevigheid van de eerde,
vastheid van stien.

Lorica of St Patrick, The strong name of the Trinity.)

Vandaage begun ik an een neij jaor,
neije vargezichten, neije einders die uutdagings uutstraalt.
Laot 't een vruchtbaar jaor worden.
Dat is wat ik mienmede Lowlanders toe weinse.

Goodgaon in 2005

To-day I start with a new year.
With new perspectives and new horizons which radiation challenge me.
let it be a fruitful year.
that is what I wish for all my fellow Lowlanders

A blessing 2005

Dear Lowlanders,

Mijn allerbeste wensen voor een gezond en gelukkig nieuwjaar!

My very best greetings for a lucky and healthy 2005 !

Here in Flanders we have a very old custom at newyearsday. It has
already been traced back till the 16th century.
Every child up to 12 (primary school) reads a letter to his parents
and onother one to his or her godfather and godmother, and others,
sometimes up to five letters. They have a nice front page in colour.
The first letters are learned by hart at the age of tree, the
selfwritten ones from the age of six.
It is written in the schools and read on the first day of january or as
soon as possible.
The content is always the same:
-I will do my best to be a good girl or boy
-I wish you all the best in the coming year
-I hope you will stay healthy
-I'll do my best at school (and proof it by writing this letter as neat
as possible).
-It ends with the best wishes for the new year
Most of the sentenses are in rime.
Afterwards every child expests to receive a present or some
pocket-money.
Almost every child in Flanders writes that kind of letters.
On this website you can find the history and some exemples.

My question is: Does this exist anywhere else? Or did it exist?
P.S.: This is besides the written newyearcards that are send by
(mail)post.

groetjes
