Slightly off the subject, perhaps, but I do know that Belgian nuns were
posted to a mission hospital in Warmbaths, District of Waterberg in the Old
Transvaal, & apparently - predictably - fluency in Flemish was a deciding
factor in the posting to this very Afrikaans district.
It wasn't an absolute success in every respect, of course. My mother, for
example (she gave birth to both my brothers there), found it took
concentration to address them in Afrikaans. A nun just isn't a Protestant
thing, see! Most disconcerting, she felt, that they didn't understand her
English.
