Dave, Lowlanders,

Oh, and there is more on "drone" (< OE _dran_ ~ _dræn_) … and a nice little
Lowlandic twist as well. See what you've done, Dave?

According to the _Herkunftsduden_, German _dröhnen_ 'to drone', 'to make a
monotonous, loud, bothersome sound', etc. comes from Low Saxon _droenen_
(<dröhnen> [drø:n:] ~ [drœ:n:], cf. Dutch _dreunen_), and German _Drohne_
'drone (bee)' comes from Middle Saxon _drône_ ~ _drâne_ (> drone <Drohne>
['dro:ne] ~ droon <Drohn> [dro:.n]), from which the verb is derived.

The Modern Low Saxon verb _droenen_ has the additional meaning 'to go on and
on talking (or even writing)', often with the connotation 'boring'
(something I'm demonstrating here).  It can also mean 'to talk
thoughtlessly' and the like.  The adjectival/adverbial derivation is
_droenig_ ['drø:nIC] ~ ['drœ:nIC] 'tedious(ly)', 'boring(ly)',
'monotonous(ly), 'nonsensical(ly)', etc., and nominal derivations are
_droen_ (<Dröhn> [drø:n] ~ [drœ:n]) 'loud sound', 'monotonous sound',
'tedious talk', 'nonsensical talk', etc., and the obligatory formation with
_buydel_ 'bag', 'sack' (cf. German _Beutel_): _droen-buydel_ (<Dröhnbüdel>
['drø:mby:d=l] ~ ['drœ:mby:d=l]) 'tedious, monotonous, boring speaker',
'someone who goes on and on and on talking (or writing)', 'someone who talks
(or writes) before thinking'.  (Cf. English "windbag" for ... someone like
me.)

A lot to drone about, huh?  Not a bad little association with the drone pipe
either, I think.
