Beste Ron:

Onderwerp: Letterkunde

Dankie vir u vertaling van 'Die Ossewa'. Dit is 'n ware toets van begrip om
'n gedig in 'n ander taal getrou om te skep.

Ek wil ook waarmerk met welke vertroue hoe u die ritme van die
oorspronklikke oorgedra het! Dit is een van die eienskappe wat eerste en
maklikste verlore word in sodanige verengelsing. Dit is 'n belangerike deel
van hierdie gedig spesifiek, en dra daarby die stappas van die os saam met
die ritme oor, asook die pluk en die ruk van die wa agternagesleep.

Mag ek vermoed dat u die woorde met deugte hiervoor gekeur het? En mag ek u
aandag daarop vestig (indien wel) hoe nader aan die Tuetoniese oorsprong hoe
meer getrou die ritme volg, en hoe nader aan die Latyns, hoe minder?

Miskien sou Gerard Manly Hopkins so 'n taak uit eie bron in Engels kon poog,
maar min ander. Maar nou dat ek daaraan dink, Daar is Grey's Elegy. Dit is
natuurlik van Engels se sterktes, die vermoê om in die een gees sowel as die
ander vrylik te verkeer. Geluk

Maar laat ek dit saggies stel, dit wat in u Nedersaksiesse werk spook dra
maar 'n vaë koppeling met die geskrewe woord as sulks...
