I think you have to stand much further back from it to get at the spirit of
Scots in translation.

"... (these) are brought into play only in the kinds of speech of a small
number of townships."

might become:

"...this juist gaes on in the wey fowk speaks in twathree airts."

This is a natural way to say it in Scots, and I think very easy to
understand.
