Faken höört wi wat vun 'n neddersassische (nedderdüütsche) Inschrift in New 
York, un schients deit keen een to weten, wat dat daarmit nipp un nau up sik 
hett.  Clara Kramer-Freudenthal harr schräven, den Riemel, denn Ji hier 
ünner findt, harren 's in New York in Steen inhaut.  Wäät Ji, nipp un nau 
wonääm sik de Inschrift befindt un of dat düsse or 'n annere is?

Folks,

Rumors have been flying around about a Low Saxon (Low German) inscription in 
New York City, and no one seems to know anything specific.  Clara 
Kramer-Freudenthal wrote the partly German and partly Low Saxon poem (below) 
has been carved into stone in New York City.  Does any of you know where the 
inscription is and if it is this one or something else?

   Die Eltern haben Platt gesprochen

   Die Eltern haben Platt gesprochen;
   Wir haben längst damit gebrochen,
   Denn wenn man etwas Bildung hat,
   Blamiert man sich so mit dem Platt.

   „Minsch, blameer dien Öllern nich,
   Dat verdeent se würklich nich.
   Beide Sproken möt bestohn,
   kene dröff uns ünnergohn.

   Kannst mit mi giern plattdüütsch snacken,
   Diene Bildung geiht nich sacken:
   Wer twee Sproken spreken kann,
   is keen Döskopp, gleuv dat man!“

Middelwiel bün ik wies worrn, dat de Dichter 'n Bernhard Siems is, man ik do 
nich wäten, wenn he leev'.  Sien Version findt Ji hier ünner.

In the meantime I find out that the author is a Berhard Siems, but I do not 
know when he lived.  You'll find his version below.

   Bildung

   Die Eltern haben Platt gesprochen.
   Wir haben längst damit gebrochen;
   denn wenn man etwas Bildung hat,
   blamiert man sich so mit dem Platt!
