Subject: Orthography

Dear Lowlanders,
Reading yesterday's posts, I was reminded of the time I had
a temporary job assessing American high school students' essays. One of
the prohibitions was that we were to ignore the more minor spelling
errors, since the writers only had a short amount of time to compose
their thoughts, and get them down on paper. But, if spelling became a
hindrance to comprehension, then we were allowed to score them accordingly.
One of the spelling errors that I quite frequently
encountered was "defanate" or "defanately" as opposed to "definite" or
"definitely." It got so bad on a couple of these essays, that I finally
started shaving off a few points because of it. This was true in those
particular examples where the word was over used.

Jim Krause
