From: Jacqueline Bungenberg de Jong <Dutchmatters at comcast.net>
Subject: Mutual Intelligibility

Hello all Lowlanders who have been publishing in this strain,

May I point at two things that have not been mentioned as such.

1.. If a person wants to understand another language he or she is more
involved with what the speakers says, and therefore understands better what
is being said.
2.. Some people find themselves more important than other people and
therefore are not as good at understanding them than vice versa. (Maybe
between the Spanish and the Portuguese, Or better still the French(Sorry my
prejudices are showing))
3.. Which brings us to another interesting question: Which is of greater
influence? language on the behavior of people or the behavior of people on
the language they speak?
Just to throw some oil on the fire. Jacqueline
