Folks.

I am resending Paul's and Leslie's postings, because since they went out we
have been joined by new people that apparently wish to locate Dutch study
sources. Welcome to all! The latest one of them joined us this morning,
from Sudan -- a first, if I remember correctly. اهلا و سهلا!

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

Subject: A good English-Dutch-English dictionary? And Reinhard, many thanks.

Soon I will be launched into learning how to read and write Dutch, so I will
need a good English-Dutch, Dutch-English dictionary. Any ideas anyone?
Cassell's Dutch Dictionary was an excellent reference (beautifully bound and
printed) I saw years ago, but I don't think it's still in print. I'm open to
suggestions (of the dictionary variety, that is).

As for you Reinhard, I'm flattered that my short message on Low-Saxon
orthography has received such attention and that I should be quoted in full
on this site. I'm still mulling over your response and will write a more
detailed reply later. However, I will say that after reading your remarks,
the matter of achieving internationally acceptable and uniform standards and
norms for Low-Saxon orthography so as to establish the written language more
widely (for present and future generations) is more complicated than I had
thought. As you say, orthographical or spelling reforms are difficult to
make work at the best of times: difficult but not impossible, one sincerely
hopes in this instance.

Many thanks for your comments,

Paul Sweet

The Cassel's dictionary is the best one I've found for the English-speaking
market that's readily available. I found it on Amazon for $29.95 if you're
in the US. Didn't check the international sites.

Alternatively, I have a ten-year-old copy in excellent shape that I would be
willing to part with for a small fee plus shipping costs, if you're not
successful in tracking it down. I bought the 2 volume van Dale in the
Netherlands several years ago, so I use that one.
