So, if we take the number of inhabitants into account, Dutch speakers from
the Netherlands (16 million) and Belgium (10 million, of whom 7 million (?)
speak Flemish = Dutch) relatively would form the majority. And together
with the Afrikaanders...
Maybe it's no coincidence that the name "De Nederlanden" for both the
Netherlands and Flandria lit. means "the Lowlands"... Of course, amongst
them are many speakers of Low Saxon and Frisian, too.

Hi, I just got <Vrobec> the Slovio translation of The Wren, from Mark
Hucko. Slovio is a constructed Slavonic language, like Interlingua is for
Romance, and Middelsprake for Germanic.

Another country that springs to mind is Kazakhstan, also Egypt, Greece and
Israel.  We always have at least one or two members in those countries,
sometimes more.  We currently also have at least one subscriber each in
Andorra, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Cyprus, Lebanon, Malta, Mexico, Morocco,
Paraguay, the Philippines, Sa`udi Arabia and Sudan.  I'm sure there are
others.

If anyone's country has not been named, I ask to be forgiven.  If you want
it to be mentioned, and you don't want to "unlurk" yourselves, please send
me a private message (sassisch at yahoo.com), and I'll mention it
confidentially.

Think of it this way:

* one of the largest countries in the world[*]
* Dutch colonial history in the north
* high-density population of European (55% "pure European"),
   incl. North European, esp. German, descent
* high educational standards (especially Rio and south)

Australia
Area:
   total: 8,511,965 sq km
   land: 8,456,510 sq km
   water: 55,455 sq km
Population:  186,112,794

As one of our Brazilian members reported not too long ago, there is even at
least one village in Southern Brazil in which Low Saxon (Low German) is
spoken, and I am not referring to Mennonites (which no doubt there are too).

Not so weird anymore, is it?

We love our friends in Brazil, even though they have been rather quiet
lately.

O que aconteceu, amigos brasileiros? Por que são tão silenciosos quanto
camundongos? Onde é o famoso espírito brasileiro?  Ajude-me segurar seua
