Actually, in Spanish a "tarta" or "torta" usually means some sort of cake. A
pie, being a somewhat unfamiliar food item to most Latin Americans, is
"pastel", or even "pai" in Central America and Mexico. Perhaps the usage in
Spain is different. I am a native speaker of US English and Argentine
Spanish, so I claim no expertise regarding the European variety of either
language!

Ben, my apologies. What I meant was the word "Vlaai"
as possibly descending from the Spanish "flan", and
positing its being the etymological source of "Vlaai",
perhaps from the Spanish presence in Flanders (ever
see a Breughel painting?)

The aim of all that was a pun. A solitary, miserable
pun. It was "If we have an open-faced tart, who needs
Spanish Vlaai (pronounced like English "fly"). In
English, _spanish fly_ is an aphrodisiac.
