Hi you hungry bunch!
All this talk about mutton fat, beef suet, tarts and pies reminded me of
an uncle of mine who touted a mixture of bacon drippings and treacle as
the ideal "schmear" for toast at breakfast time. Grrrrr!. And yes Ron:
Wat de boer niet kent dat eet hij niet!  Jacqueline<

I wonder if this 'schmear' is related to a dish from, I believe, Prussia
of plain dumplings ( whether with suet or not , I don't know) covered in
fat cubes fried till  brown + the fat. eaten with cooked 'dried' fruit of
apricots, prunes, apples and pears. The resulting mixture of plain (
dumplings) salt ( bacon fat) and sweet ( fruit) is an acquired taste. But
once acquired is surprisingly moorish!
