This is in reply to the one who asked who asked why the Anglo Saxons in
England accepted Christianity so readily when those in Europe did not. It
is NOT because The Britons were already Christians, or what the Saxons
called them, Welsh. The reason why was that whereas Charlemagne the King of
France wanted to conquer the Saxon lands north of him and his edict was be
converted or die (those who did not convert were massacred on the spot),
Pope Gregory on seeing some Angle children being sold as slaves in Rome, was
moved with compassion and wished that the Angles be converted to
Christianity. The wife of Ethelbert of Kent, the Jutish King, was herself a
Christian, and when Pope Gregory sent Augustine and other monks, they were
well received and soon the population was converted Some did fall back to
their pagan ways, but through perserverance Christianity became the dominant
religion of England. You can go to this link for the information
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01505a.htm I am not a Roman Catholic, but
it is quite accurate.

It was therefore the method employed rather the fact that some of the monks
may have been Celts, Britons, or whatever they were. Had Charlemagne sent
missions north to the Saxon lands, and did not do the convert or I will kill
you all thing, probalby most of the Saxons would have been converted.

So for all you non Anglo Saxons, Christians or Pagans, this is how it
happened.
