This is widely believed to be a reference to Eleanor of Aquitaine
(1122-1204) who was famous for her great beauty and refined manners.<

An alternative interpretation is that it represents a Marienlied and that
it should be read Engellant

i.e. the Queen of Angel land i.e. Heaven i.e. Mary

But I have always liked to think that Eleanor was meant.
