OED links thane or thegn  with "someone who held land by military service"
but makes no lionk between the OHG 'degan' boy, servant, warrior, hero and
German 'degan' = warrior.

Its IE root *teknos is a  pp formation on base *teq - *toq-   to bring
forth   ( cf Gk teknon. Skr  taknam = child )
